The Portrait in Contemporary Islamic Art
Midwest Art History Society Conference, Cincinnati, OH, March 21-23, 2019
This session examines portraiture in contemporary art from the Islamic World and its diaspora. Papers are welcome that investigate any aspect of portraiture, including how contemporary artists are using portraiture to examine notions of power and propaganda, gender roles, notions of aniconism in Islam, as well as those artists whose work reimagines the format of the portrait.

Conference presentations are expected to be under twenty minutes long. Proposals of no more than 250 words and a two-page CV should be emailed to the chairs of individual sessions.
